I visit Dr. Hogly Wogly’s Tyler Texas BBQ in Panaroma City, California and tour the interior, exterior, and even have a chance to check out their gorgeous grandfathered in wood burning brick pits. Dr. Hogly Wogly’s was built in 1969 by Johnny Greene who was a former Piggly Wiggly delivery boy in Texas. The story goes(and I always wondered) was that he was such a large fella that his wife said, “You’re not a Piggly Wiggly, but a Hogly Wogly.” As to the Dr. part, he later went on to become a pharmacologist, which in turn created the restaurant name: Dr. Hogly Wogly’s Tyler Texas BBQ. Most of the cooks who work here have been working here for over two decades. It is a basic menu with no burgers or no salads and the barbecue isn’t ‘craft’ barbecue which has taken root lately. It is traditional east Texas style ‘wet’ barbecue.
